Hi, I’m Porchia.

I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2006, but my heart found its home in curly hair over 14 years ago. I spent nearly 10 years as a stylist at the DevaCurl salon, where I received extensive hands-on training and worked exclusively with textured hair every day. That experience shaped not only my technique but also my understanding of what healthy curls truly need. To this day, my career remains centered almost entirely around curly hair.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to work backstage during New York Fashion Week, volunteer within the beauty industry, partner with nonprofit organizations to give back to the community, and mentor the next generation of beauty professionals. Giving back has always been just as important to me as the work I do behind the chair, and it’s something I continue to build into SCISSHER through community programs and educational opportunities.

But my love for hair started long before beauty school.

It started as a little girl.

If you grew up in the ‘90s, you probably remember sitting between your auntie’s legs while she braided your hair, hearing laughter from the kitchen, smelling dinner cooking, and spending the day surrounded by family. Hair wasn’t just about looking good—it was about connection, conversation, and feeling cared for.

Those moments stayed with me.

Like many people, I followed the path my parents hoped I’d take. I went to college and tried to do everything “the right way.” But creativity kept calling me. I’ve always loved creating with my hands, whether through art, design, or hair.

When the DevaCurl salon closed in June 2022, I could have walked away. Instead, I chose to bet on myself. I took everything I had learned over the years and built SCISSHER—a space rooted in education, intention, community, and genuine care for textured hair.

SCISSHER is more than a salon. It’s a brand built from years of experience, thousands of curl transformations, and a vision that’s still growing.

Today, we’re preparing to expand with a new location, develop a product line created specifically with textured hair in mind, and continue building experiences that help people feel confident in their natural hair. This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to share everything we’re creating with you.
