Woman in denim jacket smiling outdoors in a city.

Hi, I’m Porchia.

I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2006, but my relationship with hair started long before beauty school.

Growing up in the ’90s, hair was part of everyday life. You might remember sitting between your auntie’s legs while she braided your hair, hearing laughter from the kitchen, smelling dinner cooking, and being surrounded by family. Hair wasn’t just about looking good. It was about connection, conversation, and feeling cared for.

Those moments stayed with me.

I’ve always been a creative person. I love working with my hands, whether that meant art, design, or hair. Like many people, I initially followed the path I thought I was supposed to take. But eventually, I realized creativity was calling me—and I decided to listen.

I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2006, and over 14 years ago, my career found its true direction: curly and textured hair.

I spent nearly 10 years as a stylist at the DevaCurl salon, where I received extensive hands-on training and worked with textured hair every day. That experience completely shaped the way I approach curls—not just how they’re cut, but how they’re cared for, understood, and celebrated.

Over the years, I’ve also had the opportunity to work backstage during New York Fashion Week, volunteer within the beauty industry, partner with nonprofits, and mentor future beauty professionals. Giving back has always been important to me, and it continues to be part of the vision behind SCISSHER.

Then, in June 2022, the DevaCurl salon closed.

I could have walked away from curly hair altogether. Instead, I decided to bet on myself.

I took everything I had learned, everything I loved about the work, and created SCISSHER.

SCISSHER was built to be more than a salon. It’s a space centered around education, intention, community, and genuine care for textured hair. A place where you can learn your hair, understand your curls, and leave feeling more confident than when you walked in.

Today, SCISSHER continues to grow. From expanding into new locations to developing products specifically for textured hair and creating new educational and community experiences, there’s still so much ahead.

And honestly, I’m just getting started.

Whether you’ve been sitting in my chair for years or you’re discovering SCISSHER for the first time, thank you for being here, trusting me with your curls, and allowing me to share a little bit of my story with you.
